Local History

More than 200 years ago, after a journey of nearly 600 miles by foot and by horse, the first permanent settlers discovered Jerome Township. And Joshua and James Ewing found a place where they could settle down and call home.

On the heels of Joshua and James came other settlers. They traveled from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Virginia, and as far away as Ireland and Germany. The Taylors, the Sagers, the Kents, and the Currys came to Jerome Township with their hopes and dreams for a new way of life. Later came the Cones, the Beards, McCampbells, Liggetts, Gills, Flecks, Biggers, Roneys, Dodges, McKitricks, Woodburns, Foxes, Hills, Ketches, and Dorts. Jerome Village will utilize these historical family names for streets and parks throughout the community.

“Jerome Village will maintain that sense of community – with a town center and natural gathering spaces, with respect for the land, and with an opportunity for families from different places, different lifestyles, and at different stages of life to come together.”

These diverse families, many of whom continue to live in the area today, built homes and schools, parks and businesses. And they raised their families together as a community.
