Helping Children with Anxiety
With our crazy world today, it is not surprising that some children are experiencing anxiety at home, as well as inside the classroom. In children, anxiety may appear as worry or fear, as well as anger. Anxiety symptoms include, but are not limited to headaches, stomachaches, and fatigue. Children may also experience trouble falling asleep at night.
When handling anxiety, it is important to recognize that the goal is not to eliminate it completely, but to make it manageable and help the child express it appropriately. Next, it is important to express positive and realistic expectations for your child. Let your child know that they will be okay. It can also be helpful to practice coping skills with your child while they are calm. This way, they are comfortable using them while they are experiencing anxiety. While your child is experiencing anxiety, it is important to model healthy ways of coping with it.
Here is the link to Waves of Wellness Week which students were shown in February. Each video goes over quick coping skills that students can use at home or in the classroom. Try practicing with your child at home!
